Denture Cream Poisoning
62It has been discovered that popular denture cream adhesives may contain excess levels of zinc. The adhesives, including those used in Fixodent and Super Poligrip Plus, have reportedly caused zinc poisoning in some users. Zinc poisoning can cause several health issues, including copper deficiency, neurological problems (such as neuropathy), and in extreme cases, even death.
An estimated 35 million Americans wear dentures. The majority of whom are elderly, are most at risk for the negative health effects of zinc poisoning.
Currently, manufacturers of denture cream are not required by the FDA to list potential health risks associated with their products. In fact, Fixodent doesn’t even list zinc as an ingredient. Customers are filing lawsuits against denture cream manufacturers due to this failure to warn customers about the products’ zinc toxicity and possible health risks.
The Pros and Cons of Zinc
Zinc is a metal that is essential to a balanced diet. However, too much zinc can affect a person’s health negatively, causing such conditions as ataxia (a dysfunction of the nervous system that affects coordination), fatigue, copper deficiency or neuropathy. Neuropathy can lead to far more serious neurological disorders or death.
How Much Is Too Much?
The National Academy of Sciences stated in 2001 that the maximum tolerable amount of zinc that should be ingested within a day is 40 mg. The Recommended Daily Amount (RDA) for adults is 11 mg for men and 8 mg for women. However, Neurology researchers have estimated that heavy users of denture cream may be ingesting up to 330 mg of zinc per day. When 10x the recommended daily amount is ingested, it is common for zinc poisoning to occur.
The Symptoms of Zinc Poisoning
Since Zinc is known as an intestinal irritant, the first signs of zinc poisoning usually include intestinal distress, such as stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Victims of zinc poisoning may also complain of skin reactions, seizures, jaundice, numbness, joint paint, fever, chills, coughing, loss of sensation and/or a metallic taste in the mouth. Zinc poisoning may also cause irreparable mental decline. As mentioned before, zinc poisoning can also lead to neurological issues or neuropathy. Neuropathy is known for muscle spasms, cramps, loss of balance, weakness, loss of coordination, tingling, numbness or pain in extreme amounts.
An Attorney Can Help!
If you or loved one has experienced any of the previously mentioned symptoms, and have been using a denture cream adhesive such as Fixodent or Super Poligrip Plus, seek immediate medical attention. Also, contact an attorney. You may be entitled to reparations for your injuries. The law limits the time in which a claim can be filed, so act quickly!
